How do I...?

I'm pausing in the heat of battle (in mid-sentence in the middle of a war, to tell the truth) to ask some questions.  I am making the push tonight to see how far I can get toward done.  I suddenly feel like I want to write.  Perhaps it was the really good job interview I went on today, perhaps it's the weird high clouds and the snow on the peaks in the distance.  Whatever it is, I am suddenly interested in finishing this book where before I was scared of it.

So I have some questions.  The first being:  how do I choose what I am going to read?  I am scheduled to read on the radio next Wednesday (part of my push to finish), but I have no idea how to choose what I will read.  I heard from one person it's a 20 minute segment.  I have no concept of how much air time translates to pages of manuscript.  For those of you who have done this, what would you recommend?

I've also decided Molly Bates' fate:  she will be the heroine in The Whisper and the Roar, my "I am destroying Los Angeles through a series of natural disasters" action romp.  I started it a couple of years ago, and I think her perspective would turn it into a fabulous book.  I mean, if the world is falling around her ears and all she wants to do is save her poodle, what better premise could their be?  Here's the current logline for the novel:

A frumpy and overly-imaginative homebody must traverse a disaster-ridden Los Angeles in order to rescue the only thing that matters to her in the world – her toy poodle.

I also would love any suggestions on editing.  I am looking toward the next steps, and don't know how to edit a novel.  Any tips would be most helpful.

can't wait to hear your work!! I'm not up until March, but after watching people read at the last NANO thing, it doesn't take as much writing as you would think. what music are you using for your soundbed?

I'm planning on starting at the beginning of my story... we'll see how that sounds...

next, can't wait to read Whisper and Roar!!! that sounds delectable... might that be NANO '08?

(can you tell I'm a Nor Cal gal?) hee hee....

as for editing, what I do (because I am such a poor typist) is read through to correct mistakes, make sure spacing is right, etc. then I start reading for 'does this make sense?'

and then, 'does this sound good?'

and then 'do I like this?'

and then 'do I still like this?'

and then.... and you get the picture. but that is me. lots and lots of reading through it, which is time consuming, but I feel like I really have to KNOW it, inside out. and then see where that takes me.

have a lovely weekend...
